Mbuya Mask, Pende Tribe, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Wood carved mask with extended beard decorated with geometric forms, black, white and red pigment. White pigment accents on eyes and mouth. Plant fiber coiffure. Comes with custom stand. The ‘mbuya mask’ depicts a wise, old man or an important ancestor with a long beard. It is a head mask, that is worn tilted above the forehead.
