Bieri Reliquiary Guardian Figure, Fang Tribe, Gabon

Wood carved bust with extended coiffure in back. White pigment in mouth. In woven basket with bird feathers. The bieri reliquary held the bones of ancestors and were venerated through annual ceremonies at which they were present in the form of the sculptures.
